BBC Worldwide

BBC MagazinesBBC Worldwide is the commercial arm of the BBC which manages a range of media businesses around the world. Global Channels, Global TV Sales, Content & Production, Magazines, Children's, Home Entertainment and Digital Media make up the seven operating businesses within BBC Worldwide. BBC Magazines is run from the BBC’s world renowned, Wood Lane studios in London and is known for producing leading titles such as Top Gear, Good Food, Gardener’s World and Radio Times. It is the UK’s third biggest consumer magazine publisher, selling over 90 million copies every year with one in four UK adults reading a BBC magazine every month.

‘Smart Repro’
During 2006 a decision was made to implement ‘Smart Repro’, a project focused on bringing their repro in house, allowing them to have more control over the color workflow process.

The project found that by removing the outsourcing element from the process, the Magazine's production team would have more time. Costs would also be reduced due to the procedure of artwork going to and from the studio and outsourced agency being eliminated from the process. It was realized that the majority of work the external agencies were handling, the BBC was able to control in-house, as long as they had the right equipment and resources.

The strategy of bringing repro in-house has been staggered with Fresh Media Group (FMG) a transitional prepress partner, providing support where required. It is expected that the project will reach completion at the end of 2006/beginning 2007 and at full capacity the team will produce 2000 editorial pages a month. The new internal repro team will be covering 30 titles and from three studios: Youth and Children, Lifestyle and Top Gear.

Why EIZO?
At the start of the project BBC Worldwide was looking to manage color from the top, with the designers developing color awareness. To implement this workflow, a Digital Image Policy was introduced to all picture editors to standardize how images should be received.

To ensure this workflow was successful, the BBC required monitors which would provide consistency, were easy to use with calibration software, as well as being controllable and reliable. As a result they took the decision to evaluate EIZO.

Initially the BBC rolled out the EIZO FlexScan L887 for its designers, however, due to the good service and responsiveness of the EIZO Design Team, a decision was also taken to install the EIZO ColorEdge CG210 and EIZO ColorEdge CG220 in all of the three studios.

EIZO was able to provide a selection of products to suit all of the BBC’s needs and requirements. For example, a different level of accuracy is required for the various users of the monitors.

The Monitors
The EIZO FlexScan L887 was chosen for all their designers, calibrating the panels with a Monoco Optix. With its large 20.1" screen and sophisticated color control features, it is fully equipped to handle the demands of CAD/CAM, DTP, and other graphics work.

The EIZO ColorEdge CG210 was chosen due to the color accuracy and the sRGB color space. It is perfect for graphic professionals, who require an exact color reproduction. It is equipped with the EIZO software ColorNavigator, which makes it possible to perform a rapid and exact hardware calibration of brightness, white point and gamma.

The EIZO ColorEdge CG220 was chosen as the ‘top end’ monitor covering the Adobe 98 Color Space. With its 1920 × 1200 resolution it is the first monitor which can represent all the cyan tones in the Adobe RGB color space. The BBC’s graphics professionals are now able to view color images in a way never seen before on a monitor.

Benefits
By choosing EIZO, BBC Worldwide has achieved high levels of accuracy coupled with the consistency and reliability. Its designers are now able to make changes to color at the top of the workflow, without the need for external assistance.

By introducing the EIZO monitors to its studios, BBC Magazines has managed to save money and has created a quicker and more streamlined way of working, resulting in less mistakes being made through the workflow. By bringing the whole process in-house the internal staff skill level has also increased.

Danny Hargreaves, studio manager, chose EIZO as it is an ”industry leader with brand reputation” which offers service which is straight out of the box and easy to use.

Hargreaves comments, “EIZO monitors are an integral part of our color managed workflow - the key benefits we have discovered include accuracy, stability and therefore a dramatic reduction in hard copy reproofs. ”

About Eizo Nanao Corporation
EIZO Nanao Corporation was established over 30 years ago and its core business during a majority of this time has been the supply of CRT displays. In 1991 EIZO developed a new monitor based on LCD technology and today EIZO is one of the top third party monitor manufactures in the industry. Today EIZO is unique in its market and this is clearly evident due to the following factors:

Monitors Specialists
Few companies in this market are solely dedicated to the design and development of computer displays. EIZO is independent of any specific technology which allows it to source the best possible components at any time to provide high quality, leading edge products. This also helps to prevent shortages caused by a dependence on a particular supplier.

Innovation
EIZO has won numerous awards for innovation in its chosen field. It has consistently pioneered developments such as the first multi-frequency monitors, dual input control, auto fault diagnostics and more recently it was the first company to establish an industry direction for large format LCD monitors and slim edged bezels.

Philosophy
The guiding principle in EIZO's monitor production is one primarily driven from a position of engineering excellence. This ethos of quality is most apparent in the areas of design and manufacture, which ultimately results in an unrivalled consistency of product. Whilst being aware of the need to be market competitive, EIZO is not a company that is prepared to compromise on technology.
